The first incident happened around 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 2, when Brian Gregg, 25, of Plainview, was inside a Plainview home while cleaning a handgun when he allegedly accidentally discharged the weapon striking a 17-year-old friend of his stepbrother in the neck, police said.
Following the shooting, all three got into a car to drive to the hospital. While traveling northbound on Plainview Road at the intersection of Old Country Road, the trio became involved in a four-car multi-vehicle accident, which included an off-duty Nassau County Police officer, police said.
The officer, who sustained minor injuries, called 911 and attended to the injured parties involved in the accident.
As a result of the crash, four people were injured, including the officer, all who were taken to area hospitals for treatment of what appears to be non-life-threatening injuries.
The shooting victim was listed in serious but stable condition.
Gregg, who was also injured, was charged with criminal possession of a weapon. He will be arraigned when medically practical, police said.
